Properties: Reduces blood pressure, relieves muscle spasms, and improves appetite. Can be good for arthritis, gout, and kidney problems. Functions as a diuretic, antioxidant and sedative. It can reduce the uric acid in your system.

Caution: This herb is an abortifacient (causing abortion/miscarriage). The seeds should not be used at all during pregnancy neither should the plant itself be consumed in large amounts due to this property.

Brownies Without Guilt

We must have chocolate for wellness. Any radical shift or change in eating styles has to include good strong doses of chocolate. And there’s no better healthier approach than what we typically find at Elana’s Pantry.

R&D vs. Marketing for Cancer Drugs

Ever wonder how much is spent on research and development vs. marketing cancer treatment drugs (NOT that this question validates the current cancer treatment approach!):

“Pharmaceutical companies spend nearly TWICE as much on marketing in the US as they do on R&D! This finding was published in the journal PloS Medicine five years ago in 2008.2 So the tune they keep singing – that they need drug patents and outrageous price tags on their drugs to keep making new medications – is growing quite tired.

Drug companies use patents because it allows them to make more money. On average, Americans pay TWICE the price for the identical drugs compared to other countries. But the fight over patentability and drug prices is really only distracting from the much bigger issue at hand, which is the value of the drugs themselves… or rather, the lack thereof.”

Cultivating Presence

“Whenever you watch the mind, you withdraw consciousness from mind forms, and it then becomes what we call the watcher or the witness. Consequently, the watcher–pure consciousness beyond form–becomes stronger, and the mental formations weaker.” Eckhart Tolle – The Power of Now

Acid Stomach

The popular solutions provided by the healthcare community aren’t exactly optimum. Look at what Dr. Christiane Northrup has to say about it:

“Acid indigestion, also known as reflux or heartburn, occurs when your stomach acids back up into the esophagus. The standard treatment is prescribing a proton pump inhibitor to keep the stomach from producing any acid or popping an antacid to reduce symptoms. Proton pump inhibitors are used to treat ulcers, too. The problem is that your stomach acids help balance the bacterial growth in the gut. Too little acid can result in too much bacteria, which can lead to yeast overgrowth (infection) throughout the body, as well as gas and bloating.  This condition is largely the result of a highly-refined food diet, which is converted into high blood sugar too quickly.

Your body also needs stomach acids to break down minerals, including calcium, magnesium, and iron. Insufficient stomach acid can lead to deficiencies in these minerals as well as in vitamin B-12. It’s not uncommon for women to develop low bone mineral density (osteopenia) if they take acid blockers for long periods of time.”

Race to Obscure

It’s tremendously difficult to conjure any enthusiasm for the Komen “Race for the Cure” propaganda when community members and friends get all fired up. I keep quiet. Here’s why…

“even more troubling than the revelation of their right-wing anti-choice agenda was the realization among many critics that principal sponsors of the Race for the Cure produce or use products that actually cause cancer. A race for the cure might be a way to run away from an honest disclosure of the causes of cancer. A Race for the Cure might just be a Race to Obscure.”

and…

“The national Komen Foundation Partners include American Airlines, BMW, and Ford Motor Company. In an article, “Relationship Between Genetic Damage from PAH in Breast Tissue and Breast Cancer,” F. Perera and others in Carcinogenesis, July 2000, say Polcyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are widespread environmental contaminants that are generated by gasoline and oil combustion and also are found in cigarette smoke and broiled meat. In lab experiments, PAH cause mammary cancer in animals.”

My appetite for b.s. is down to nil these days with so many precious people getting cancer while the vital relevance of causal realities are abandoned in the wake of some glorious campaign.

Red Meat Risky?

Dr. Mercola’s latest input on this ongoing debate:

“The latest study is not the first to link gut bacteria to heart disease. In 2011, the same researchers, Hazen and colleagues, used data from nearly 2,000 people and showed that when the bacteria in your gut break down lecithin, a type of fat found in meat, eggs, dairy and other animal foods along with baked goods and dietary supplements, and its metabolite choline, it also leads to the creation of TMAO and, subsequently, increases your risk of heart disease.5

In response to this and the current study, many have wondered whether red meat and other animal foods, along with supplements containing L-carnitine, lecithin or choline should be avoided. Chris Masterjohn PhD, who is currently researching fat-soluble supplements at the University of Illinois, rebutted the 2011 findings stating:6

“…previous studies have shown that supplements with salts of free choline do in fact generate TMAO, but uncontaminated phosphatidylcholine, the main form of choline found in food, does not. Moreover, choline-rich foods like liver and eggs did not produce more TMAO than a control breakfast, but seafood, which is generally contaminated with some trimethylamine or TMAO, did.”

Masterjohn also disagrees with the group’s latest findings, in which the researchers claim that carnitine in red meat contributes to heart disease via the same pathway, i.e. the creation of TMAO. According to Masterjohn, incomplete reporting of data in the paper combined with “wild runaway inferences” by the press has generated a grossly misleading picture of red meat’s impact on heart disease, while simultaneously ignoring the food group that actually generates the most TMAO.

He points out that red meat is only one of many foods that increases TMAO when eaten, and cites data from a 1999 study that evaluated TMAO excretion following consumption of 46 different foods, which shows that red meat generated no more TMAO than fruits and vegetables. In fact, some veggies, such as peas, cauliflower and carrots generated more TMAO than beef did!”

Gut Facts

Goodies from Dr. Christiane Northrup

“The lining in your gut is actually part of your immune system. In fact, it’s your first line of defense against bugs and other organisms that can make you ill. For millennia, this immune mechanism was needed for the survival of the species. Humans lived without refrigeration and didn’t always know enough to practice safe food handling. When your gut is healthy, it keeps any foreign invaders in food from getting into the bloodstream. It also protects you from airborne viruses and bacteria.”

We lived WITHOUT refrigeration. We know this but do we ever really THINK it through?

Kombucha Tea

Kombucha tea is a must for me. My favorite brand is Synergy’s Cherry Chia and it packs a great sustaining energy punch. So what is Kombucha tea? Check the quote below…

“The kombucha, or Manchurian, “mushroom” has reputedly been used in Asian countries and in Russia for centuries. The “mushroom” itself is not eaten. Rather, a tea is made by fermenting the “mushroom” for about a week in a mixture of water, sugar, and green or black tea, with apple cider vinegar or a bit of previously made tea added. Kept in this mixture, the “mushroom” reproduces and the “daughter mushrooms” can then be used to produce more tea.

Although commonly referred to as a mushroom, the kombucha is actually a combination of a number of different elements, including lichen, bacteria, and yeast. Kombucha tea contains a variety of different nutrients and other health-promoting substances. It is a natural energy booster and detoxifier that may also help slow or reverse the aging process and fight such serious diseases as AIDS, cancer, and multiple sclerosis.” from Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Phyllis A. Balch and James F. Balch

When I first realized that sugar is used in the fermentation process (duh) I was pretty upset. But it’s not enough to move this into a high glycemic ranking. Great stuff if you get the right mix!

Soul Food

“To listen to the silence, wherever you are, is an easy and direct way of becoming present. Even if there is noise, there is always some silence underneath and in between the sounds. Listening to the silence immediately creates stillness inside you. Only the stillness in you can perceive the silence outside. And what is stillness other than presence, consciousness freed from thought forms?” Eckhart Tolle – The Power of Now
